How to Learn Chords Faster (and Change Chords Quicker)…

Real quick intro: I’ve previously written about how to learn chords faster and change chords quickly.   However…. I’ve just learned a few new techniques that I am totally going to start using (for myself and my students).  Check out the video above from Jody Fisher.

Jody does an awesome job breaking it down… even if the chords that Jody uses are beyond your skill level… the tips/techniques are amazing and will absolutely help you learn chords faster.

The Best Guitar Tuner in the Universe…

This post may contain affiliate links.  Please read my disclosure for more info.

I’ve gone through a ton of different guitar tuners since I started playing.

The old kind that you plug directly into.

The kind with a microphone that you sit on your lap.

Even just tuning to songs I know are already in the key of E.

Guitar tuner apps that basically do the same thing.

(FYI – if you’re looking for a guitar tuner app or any guitar apps click here, I like the Pano Tuner app… it’s a free guitar tuner app and works on iOS and Android)

And lastly…. I’ve definitely been through a ton of different kinds of clip on tuners.

So..

What’s the best one?

Short answer:  This Snark Tuner.

Snark Clip-On Chromatic All Instrument Tuner Red
Easy to use + Hard to lose = Awesomeness

Specifically, the Snark Clip-On Chromatic All Instrument Tuner (Red)

Best Practice Advice Comes From A Jogging Monkey…

So I’ve just binged both seasons of Bojack Horseman on Netflix.  It’s pretty good (not for kids)!

Anyway, the above clip is from the last episode of Season 2.

And the advice from the jogging monkey is perfect for guitar practice (or for anything really).

Play a little each day…. but play every day.

I could talk about things like keeping your guitar out in the open, or deliberate practice.

I’ve written about them on my e-mail list and posted articles about them.

But really.

Just listen to the jogging monkey.

Why I Love Teaching Guitar Lessons in Annapolis..

ego alley guitar lessons
An awesome place to learn the guitar…

I’ve been teaching guitar for a few years.  For those who don’t know, I teach lessons in the homes of my students.

This means that I travel around the Annapolis and Anne Arundel county area….

a lot.

I know the roads really well and I can time my arrival to my students’ homes within minutes (barring any crazy traffic).

I know when to take Ritchie and when to take 97, or even sneak up General’s highway.

I know when to take the the Severn River bridge (50) or when to take the Old/New Severn River bridge by the Naval Academy.

And even with all this crazy travel and traffic…. I still love teaching lessons in Annapolis..  Here’s why…..

The Weirdest Guitar Lessons I’ve Had… Pet Edition…..

Annapolis Guitar Lessons
Cozy Guitar Lesson…

I’ve been teaching lessons for a few years.

For those of you who don’t know, I do guitar lessons in the homes of my students.

I’ve always done it this way, and absolutely love it.

Something I started to notice shortly after I began teaching…. everyone had pets.

Mostly dogs, a few cats, some fish, and some other (more unusual animals).

Maybe it’s the area that I teach (Annapolis, Maryland is definitely a town that loves its dogs).

And since I do in-home guitar lessons, the dogs and cats generally like to inspect me and my guitar case.

To be fair it probably has the scents and smells of all of the other houses I visit (the guitar case… not me).

Since I typically write about guitar tips and tricks, I thought it may be fun to mix things up a bit and share with you some of the more unusual, pet-related-things I’ve witnessed during my guitar lessons

(warning… some of this stuff may be gross.. but still funny… read on at your own risk)

Here we go….

The BEST Guitar Apps (Including the Best Guitar Tuning App)…

This post may contain affiliate links.  Please read my disclosure for more info.

Not that you need more apps for your phone…

….but I just read a Guitar World article about “the 25 best apps”….

25 apps??

Seriously?

Overkill.

If you’ve read my e-mails you know I’m all about efficiency (25 apps is just nonsense).

So here’s what I use.  Take ’em or leave ’em.

The Best Free Online Guitar Lessons (where YOU can teach yourself guitar)

As a guitar teacher, my students frequently ask about online resources for learning the guitar (especially free online guitar lessons, youtube guitar lessons, and so forth).

It’s funny though…

A lot of my students seem to think I’ll be mad if they stray from what we work on in our lessons.

Definitely not.

If anything… I’m super excited to see them so interested that they’re willing to take additional time to learn.

So…

Here are the best free guitar lessons if you want to learn to play guitar online…

How to Hold a Guitar (the BEST way)…

How NOT to hold a guitar
How NOT to hold a guitar

You have a guitar.

You have a list of songs to play.

You have no idea what you’re doing.

How do I hold the guitar correctly?

Where do I put my thumb when playing the guitar?

Where do I put my arm?

Does the guitar go between my legs?

Should I stand up?

Do I prop my foot up?

Why do my fingers hurt?

You’ve got questions….    Don’t worry.  I’ve got answers…..
